Up-Dated ICMJE Recommendations
(January 2026)

The ICMJE updated its Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals in January 2026.

The updated Recommendations include two new sections addressing:

  • Expanded guidance on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in publishing (new Section V)
  • Authors' access to data (new Section III.L.2)

ICMJE also updated its guidance on:

  • Sponsor agreements and academic freedom (Section II.B)
  • Scientific Misconduct (Section III.B.)
  • Clinical trial registration (III.L.1)
  • Reporting of sources of support (Section IV.3.A)
